Apart from the convenience of working out of one’s own home, translation jobs are also lucrative. According to a survey by American Translator’s Association (ATA) the average income earned by a full time freelance translator is over $60K per year i.e. $5000 per month. In fact depending on experience and capacity one can earn over $100K doing freelance translation even while working for as little as 15 days a month. The translation jobs could be business translation, technical translation, medical translation etc. depending on the domain knowledge and experience that the translators possess. Many at home mothers with responsibility of raising a family find working part time very appealing and translation jobs fulfill this desire perfectly. In a recent study in US 60% of all employed mothers preferred part time jobs to full time positions and this figure has risen compared to a previous study of 10 years ago. Work from home part time jobs provide the perfect work life balance that many corporate executives yearn for. However a work at home mom (WAHM) intending to take up translation jobs must be fluent in both the source and target languages and must be willing to do at least 10 to 15 pages per day in order to earn a decent income. Beginners may have to be satisfied with lower rates per page of $5 to $10 while experienced translators can expect to earn double or even triple the amount. WAHM translation jobs can be found through online translation agencies, bulletin boards or portals for freelance jobs. One can browse the job postings as well as register in some of them by sending their resume. To sum up, taking up translation as a profession is an excellent option for work at home mothers and they can expect to earn a decent income while at the same time enjoy free time to take care of family and loved ones.
