Frequently Asked Questions

from our Help Center

Why my account is pending?

Currently, the recruitment process is paused for some language pairs. If the recruitment process is currently ongoing in your language pair/s, you will be contacted by our support team and offered all the necessary information regarding the next steps, in which your account will become verified.

Why I am not getting translation projects?

If you are already a certified member of our community of translators and your account is active, the lack of available projects may be the result of the current workflow or your relative rank.

If you feel like there is an issue with your notifications, you can check your Open Projects page. If you do see available projects in your Open Projects page, and you were not notified about them, please contact our support team for assistance. Please remember that the number of notifications per hour is limited.

Who can join as a translator?

Translators with relevant academic history and work experience can join the OHT platform. Merely being a native speaker is not enough to qualify as a translator. After you join, you will be asked to upload your CV and professional certificates and, possibly be asked to do a professional translation exam.

Please note, the recruitment in some languages may be temporarily suspended. You can register and have your profile updated anyway. We will contact you if the recruitment is resumed.

What is proofreading project?

In a proofreading project, your task is similar to the editing one:
You need to correct the text in your own language. It may be a monolingual proofreading, where the text you check and correct is not a translation and thus doesn't have the original to check against it, or a proofreading of an already existing translation.
If you proofread the already existing translation, please correct it, but do not comment on its quality unless the client instructs otherwise. In many proofreading projects, the translation is made by the clients themselves.
In case this is a proofreading-only project there will be no Editor report section.

What are priority points?

You can earn priority points by performing different types of tasks in the system:

  • Editing projects.
  • Bonus projects
  • QA projects
  • CQR projects.

If  you qualify for these tasks, separate sections for them will appear in your Open projects tab.

The amount of the priority points you collected influence your relative rank.

The higher you relative rank is, the more projects you get access to.

When you accept a project for which you had priority in the allocation, a certain amount of priority points will be reduced from your profile.

This amount is calculated by the system according to every project's parameters.

What are credits? How do I earn credits?

Credits are the monetary unit used in the system. Each credit is worth $0.01. When converted to other currencies exchange fees may apply.

Potential credits are credits for projects that you have started working on. They keep this status until a project becomes completed, this may take a few days to happen, then they become pending credits.

You can see the status of your credits in your Dashboard ("My Balance" Tab).

Once the translation project becomes completed, you'll be credited according to the number of words you have translated. A project becomes completed 7 days after the translation is submitted or after the last action has been done on the project page (such as a comment on the General Discussion board).

The credits for the translation will become earned after 72 hours, from the moment the project becomes completed, and the bonus – after 30 days, from the moment the project becomes completed.

When you have reached a minimum of 5000 credits ($50), you can convert them to cash and request payment via the Control Panel. You also have the possibility to withdraw 2000 credits or more out of the 5000 collected for your first request.
The default payment terms for the first convert request are Net+60. There is no possibility to choose another date.

For your further convert requests, it is enough to reach 2000 credits rather than 5000, and you will be able to convert them right away. The default payment terms for the next requests are Net+30 (i.e. at the end of the following month).
However, as soon as your first request is cleared (the payment is successfully made), you will also be able to withdraw your funds at any time you wish. The money requested prior to the default payment terms will be subject to a modest Early Withdrawal Fee. The Early Withdrawal Fee is subject to change and will be specified on the “Convert to Cash” page.
Additionally, a Manual Handling Fee may be stated during the conversion process.

Your One Hour Translation account is similar to a bank account in the sense that you can withdraw money from the account at any time. Note, however, that on our regular payment dates (the 15th and the end of the month) there is no Manual Handling Fee since payments on these dates are processed automatically.

We offer three payment options for translators. We allow payment via the OHT Payoneer MasterCard or wire transfer (both options of which are processed by Payoneer), or you can receive payment via PayPal. Please remember that PayPal may deduct its transaction fees from what we pay you, depending on your account type.

How will I be paid?

We offer three payment options for translators.

  1. We allow payment via the OHT Payoneer MasterCard
  2. By wire transfer to your bank account (both options of which are processed by Payoneer),
  3. You can receive payment via PayPal. Please remember that PayPal may deduct its transaction fees from what we pay you, depending on your account type.
How much can I earn?

Once you are registered on our site, you can check the pay intended for every project right on its page and choose whether you are interested to work on this specific translation.

Payment for translators is calculated per project based on quite a complicated formula so it's hard to provide exact numbers, however, as a rule payment is determined by a number of parameters:

Project-wise:

  • project’s word count,
  • language pair,
  • the specific type of material (Expertise)

Client-wise:

  • client’s status within the site,
  • client's MyTeam preferences

Translator-wise:

  • translator’s quality rating
  • translator’s relative rank
  • translator’s working record with OHT
  • response time
  • and more.

The calculation is dynamic and the payment for one and the same project may also change with time.

It is important to remember that in many ways the payment depends on yourself and your performance at OHT.

To give you a general impression about our average payment: based on our calculations and statistics, the starting pay for a project which takes an hour to complete is $12.

The payment goes up if you can work faster and deliver good quality, if you score a perfect track record with OHT, etc.

In addition to the standard payment, a bonus payment will be added to each project. The bonus payment will be calculated per word and will be available for conversion 30 days after the project changed status to complete, assuming the client was 100% satisfied with the translation.

How can I earn more?

Our system is simple and transparent, the better you are in terms of quality, attitude, volume, client feedback etc., the faster you will progress, it is totally in your hands!

We have priced our rates in an attempt to find a balance between the needs of translators and our clients.

We are going to dynamically adjust project payments based on the many parameters related to the translator including:

  • Translation Quality - the most important factor!
  • "Pick-up" Ratio - how many of the offered projects are done in practice.
  • Availability and Responsiveness
  • Status, Time and Projects with OHT
  • Other parameters

Therefore, in many ways, the payment depends on yourself and your performance at OHT.

The payment goes up if you can work faster and deliver good quality, if you score a perfect track record with OHT, etc.

Apart from this, we provide a greater benefit to translators by:

  • Eliminating all the hassle from freelance translation. For example, we always pay the translator (assuming the work was done properly), even when the client has not paid. We also handle customer service, etc.
  • Offering translators the flexibility of taking jobs that fit with other involvements.
  • Providing ratings, statistics, and reviews from a disparate pool of clients and professional peers that can help boost translator profiles and improve their services. The more a translator works with us, the more ratings and reviews he/she is likely to receive.

In addition, you can earn more on our site by joining our affiliate program. Simply log in to your account and go to the following link in order to read more about it and join:

You can place your own affiliate link in your e-mail signature, Facebook profile, your blog, website, etc.
