Google has announced that it is developing software for a phone that can translate speech into a different language almost instantly. I assume that the first phrase it will need is: “I have an app for that.” Speech-to-speech translation should, according to Franz Och, Google’s head of translation services, be possible and work reasonably well in a few years’ time.
Seasoned future-watchers may think that they have been here before. On January 7, 1954, IBM issued a press release announcing that it had managed to translate Russian into English using an electronic brain. Although Professor Léon Dostert, the Georgetown language scholar involved in the project, conceded it wasn’t yet possible “to insert a Russian book at one end and come out with an English book at the other”, he predicted that within three to five years “interlingual meaning conversion by electronic process ... may well be an accomplished fact”.source:timesonline

A Google anunciou o desenvolvimento de um software para telefone que pode traduzir a fala em outro idioma de modo praticamente instantâneo. Eu suponho que a primeira frase a ser traduzida seria: “Existe um aplicativo para isso.” De acordo com Franz Och, chefe dos serviços de tradução na Google, uma tradução fala-a-fala é possível e pode funcionar adequadamente dentro de poucos anos.
Previsores podem achar que isso não é novidade. Em 7 de janeiro de 1954, a IBM lançou um comunicado à imprensa anunciando que conseguiu realizar uma tradução de russo para inglês utilizando um cérebro eletrônico. Embora o Professor Léon Dostert, especialista em idiomas de Georgetown envolvido no projeto ter admitido que ainda não é possível “introduzir um livro em russo em um lado e receber um livro em inglês em outro, ele previu que dentro de três a cinco anos a “conversão do significado interlingual por procedimentos eletrônicos...pode tornar-se um fato consumado”.
